Month: November 2008

  • Breezing, freezing, and sneezing

I got off from work on Friday night (28 Nov) at around 8pm, heading church for fellowship.  It will take me one hour to get to the fellowship, and I know the fellowship will almost be done when I get there.  But I will just go and have dinner with them (i.e. we always have dinner after the fellowship).

So tired at 8pm, I was walking away from the university to the train station (Siu Hong).  It was breezing.  In fact, it was freezing. Any uncovered part of my body felt cold.  I know my face was combating with the cold wind: watering eyes and runny nose.

It reminded me of my life in Torrance (2002-2004).  I don't have a car during that period of time in the US;  I rode bike to school.  I hate taking night classes, but unfortunately, I had to take a Japanese class from 6:30pm to 9pm for one semester.  Off from class at around 9pm, I rode bike home, and the air was cold and dry outside.  This is all about endurance.

  • Admin o

  • American Healthcare

I watched this movie by Michael Moore --- Sicko (2007).

Coming out as a Sociology major, I am still very interested in American healthcare. This is the single major problem that the US has. Still unresolved...

  • Saturday (8 Nov 2008)

    Late morning

At 11:20am, I was trying to upgrade the firmware of my digital set-top box.  I followed all stipulated procedures as given on the box's official website.  I was required to plug a USB drive, formatted in FAT32, into the set-top box.  The box is supposed to read the file (i.e. the firmware) downloaded into that USB drive.

However, the upgrade was an unsuccessful one.  The box can't restart and can't load.  The box is displaying an error code.

I called the technical support line and told the operator about the error code I saw.  The operator suggested that the box be brought to the repair center for further evaluation.  She said we're gonna close at noon.  I said, "I lived close to Prince Edward, do you think I can get there by the close of business?"  She hesitated but said, "I think...you can make it."

So I rushed.  I left home at 11:40pm and arrived Tsuen Wan at 12:20pm!  However, at 12:00 noon, when I was still at the subway, I called the technical line again and begged them to wait for me.  The woman was grunchy this time: "what? you're still in Kwai Hing? what took you so long!?".

Anyway, the fix it for me in 15 minutes.  The box is reborn!

    Amplifier

At around 1-2pm, I went to Apliu Street to buy a signal amplifier for the set top box.  In adverse weather conditions, the six ATV channels are displaying blocks/checkers.  It took me forever to find a reliable store...

Now with the amplifier, all channels are fine!

All remote controls are not working

At night we watched Reservation Road (2007).  After that, all of a sudden, the remote controls for the TV and set top box aren't working!  So horrible!

The next day (sunday), I found that it was due to the interference produced by a nearby power adaptor.  It is believed that the heat generated from the adaptor emitted infrared that interfere with the remote controls' infrared.
